1851 FORT LARAMIE TREATY

Approximately 38 miles of DAPL would trespass across treaty territory set aside for exclusive use by member tribes of the Oceti Sakowin, or “Great Sioux Nation.”  This includes the Yankton Sioux Tribe, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, all of whom have now filed lawsuits in federal court in D.C.  The trespass through this territory would violate the 1851 Fort Laramie Treaty.  Because treaties are the supreme law of the land pursuant to the U.S. Constitution, this trespass and the authorization by federal agencies of the trespass constitute violations of federal law.
